This series, Skin Deep Beauty, is one of three dimensional paintings based on still life paintings by old masters, who tried to capture the transient nature of beauty through paintings. I was born colour blind. For this reason, the themes of colour and beauty frequently recur in my art works. I always use a smartphone app for identifying colours when I paint. The app informs the viewer of the technical names of the colours that can be seen through the phone camera, giving a viewer objective information rather than a subjective impression of colour. These works were made by placing colours as directed by the app, rather than painting colours. This process reproduces existing still life paintings as mirror images of the originals, reinterpreting the paintings, and asking the viewer to reconsider the concept of beauty which is shared in our society.
